Roleplay Conversation Starters and Introductions

Today I would like to discuss roleplay introductions and conversation starters for use in game.  One thing I see too often in roleplay, is the generic "How are you today?" introduction.  It's not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just...well, boring if you let it sit at that.  Not only that, it generally leads to the same conversation every time and goes nowhere.  You know those conversations you feel stuck in when someone is trying to be polite, so you don't want to excuse yourself? That's what this leads to...

Goblin Names:

Goblin names are a lot like Gnome Names, though a bit different.  You can still get some ideas from gnome names though.  From Wowwiki:

Every goblin has a given name and a family name. The family names portray some ancestor's achievement, though a goblin may take a new family name if he feels he has made an accomplishment that outstrips that of his eponymous forebear.

Gnome Names:

A little background on Gnome names from wowwiki:

“Gnomes have family names that represent an honored ancestor’s achievements, but they only keep these names until some time in their thirties. At this point, gnome society expects them to have made their own achievements, and thus the gnome invents a new name that represents his own accomplishments. This name then takes the place of his family name. “
Gnomes have first names, which is generally similar to a human name, while their last name, or family name, tends to reflect engineering, height or other tradeskill.

Here are some first names that mean “small” in various languages, perhaps finding a name you like will tell you more about the traits you would like your character to display.  For instance – Piera means small rock.  Perhaps your character could be unyielding and stubborn.

Draenei Names

Draenei, unlike most races, do not have last names.  The names of Draenei seem closely modeled afer Indian names.  Here is a list of male and female names that would work well for accurate sounding Draenei names:

RP Names for Dwarves

Like most races, Dwarves have first names and last names – also called family names.  Family names or last names, often indicate their clan. Some family names refer to a special feat or accomplishment .  Dwarven first names resemble Scottish names.

Here are some examples of Dwarven names:

Night Elves and Blood Elves have similar sounding first names, however there is a difference in last names, or titles. Night elves tend to adopt names and titles that deal with shadow, moon and stars such as “Shadowsong” or “Stareye”.  Blood elves tend to have names that deal with the sun, light and dawn such as “Sunstrider or “Dawnsinger”.  Each race tends to use names heavy in vowels that have flourish and flow off the tongue.

The following list of names would be considered acceptable to be used for either race:

Undead RP Names

Forsaken were human at one point, occasionally other races as well, so you can view a list of human names for some idea’s.  Old-Fashioned and Medieval names are also frequently used among the undead.  Often, a Forsaken cannot remember their name from life, so they pick one that sounds fitting – these names often sound darker than normal human names.  Some undead also change their name upon undeath to represent, remember or signify their new way of life.

Here are some darker or gothic sounding names you can use, or read over for idea’s when naming your character:

Lore appropriate RP names for Tauren Characters

Here is a note from Wowwiki regarding Tauren names:

The last name of a tauren is usually a family name, handed down through the generations. If the tauren has performed some act that has made an impression on the elders of his tribe, however, he may choose to take on his own last name to commemorate that act. Tauren have several names. They receive a name at birth and another during a ceremony to celebrate reaching adulthood. This adult name describes some event in their lives or some notable individual characteristic: for instance, Blackhide, Earthborn, Halfhorn, Hidemaker, Riverwatcher, Scar, Splithoof, Stormchaser, or Windrunner. A tauren may also acquire a third name that he uses when dealing with outsiders.
Tauren names are largely based on spiritualism and symbology.  They are very similar to Native American names, which is a good way to brainstorm names for your Tauren should you need to.

Here is a list of names I have created and found for use with Tauren.

Troll Names

A note on WoW troll names from Wowwiki:

various syllables can be added to the beginning or end of a troll's name to denote status and ability. Troll given names are usually one syllable, to facilitate the additions of these titles. Some trolls drop their given names altogether and are known purely by their titles.

Zandali, is the language of the Trolls in World of Warcraft.  Following, are some words in Zandali that can be used as Troll names:

Atalai – Devoted One

Adding “Fon” to the end of a word or name means “loner”

Adding “jin” to the end of a name means “elder or tribal chief”

Zufli means baby witch, “zul” is a derogatory name for female witch doctors, but some females have taken the title as a mark of pride.

So Zul’fon would mean solo witch doctor, or something similar

Troll names are usually short and use vowels.  Female names often begin and end with a vowel.

Here is a list of male and female troll names for your use.  If you would like more, searching for Jamaican names provides some good examples

RP Names for Orcs

A note on Warcraft Style Naming conventions:

From wowwiki:

"Most orcish names derive from words in their language that have some complex meaning or hidden significance to their families. Typically, this is the name of a favorite thing or relative. Family names don't exist; most orcs have last names related to some great deed of heroism or honor. However, in the case of truly incredible deeds, an orc might take on the last name of his father to ensure that the chronicle of that terrific deed lives on.The concept of honor is seen in every level of orc society, even in their naming practices. An orc’s first name is given early in life, often derived from a family name or the name of a great hero. The tribe bestows the second name after the orc reaches maturity, this name based upon some great deed. Such a practice gives rise to surnames such as Doomhammer, Elfkicker, Foe-ender, Skullsplitter, Thumper, and the like. This second name may be changed if a new one seems more appropriate."
Here are some Orc names I have collected that you can use for your characters, or simply to brainstorm.

Human names are one of the easiest races to think up a name for.  The hard part is trying to come up with something unique that isn’t taken already.

Here is a list of human names that I am fond of, I try to keep a list of unique names but not all will be. I hope that it will help you brainstorm ideas for your characters:
